Like I need another project.... With economic times in dire straights being a property manager is not as profitable as it usually is. I am trying hard to keep good tenants by tolerating mild lateness and not charging late fees. Long story short....I have inherited a cool car that is in pretty OK shape and I am actually excited to play with it and restore it to a sweet and clean little sleeper. The car is a 2 door '71 142 Volvo. I haven't played around in the Volvo world much and it's time to start finding resources. I plan on going through it completely and no I don't plan on keeping it stock. Whatcha got?

Here is a cool pic I lifted from the Gorenet...

Sweet! A 142 has tons of potential.

IPD has some fun toys.
It will never be a rocket but plenty of zip with some tweaks. For a shoebox they can be made to handle very well:D

a Buddy of mine is a fan of old Volvos and he's a super smart dude. I'll clue him into this thread in case he can add some value. He knows these old Volvos like we know cruisers. (he'll says things like, well in 74 they changed from this to that, but there's an aftermarket doo-hickey...etc.)

Here's the reply from my buddy here at work...

Sweet. I actually think I know who the blue 142 in the picture he posted belongs to:
http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1710121#17400466

I don't know as much about those older models as I do about the 240s, 740s, and 940s, but the source for parts both for maintenance and performance is IPD (www.ipdusa.com).

It's got a carbureted SOHC 4-cylinder in there, probably a B20 (2-liter), around 100hp. A-arm suspension in the front (they didn't get MacPhersons until the 240 series), solid rear in the back (Dana 30 maybe?). From the firewall back it's essentially the same as the 240 series.

More comments:

As far as performance goes, you can get bigger carbs, hotter cams, custom intakes, etc. They were never offered with a turbo stock but you could probably add one on without too much trouble, the engine's definitely stout enough to handle low-pressure boost. Or you could grab a B230FT from a wrecked 740/940 turbo and drop it right in (along with the engine management electrical system of course).

Ford and Chevy V8s can be made to fit without too much drama as well.

on a serious note, the 142 can be made to handle quite well. Not a lot of power to be gained, but they do autocross well.

be careful though, as most of the electrical things, like wiper motors/linkage and the like are unobtainium

It appears that the car will be mine if I want anything from this individual and I have been wanting a car project again. These cars aren't rare just old and I'm not a purest. One thing you can be sure of is if it's my car, it will have enough power! ;) I dig the old import sedans and I see some serious potential! If it's not what I want I will just baseline and tune it with some detailing and sell it. Who knows....I do still have a very nasty stroker B18C5 motor that didn't get put together and installed in the daughters car before it got stolen so maybe a cross breed is in the future!(?) Bet the little beast would cruise pretty good with some tuner turbo Honda blood running through it veins! :lmao::lmao: :flamingo::flamingo: Look out Toylets here comes Volda! :lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao: B18142 Type R! :flamingo::bowdown: :homer:

I used to have a 240, and have always wanted to find a clean 142. The 142's are actually pretty hard to find in good shape. Cool find. They make for pretty  looking rally cars:

You still have a B18C5?

Do tell...

I grew up on 200 series Volvos and can say I beat the f*ck out of them. They all lived... That B21 is robust. I remember being impressed that a 1975 model 245 had fuel injection, 4 wheel discs, articulated driveshaft, 3 point belts in the rear, lots of nice touches.

I had a '78 245 that I used to get airborne over RR tracks on a regular basis. Donuts, 100 MPH runs down I-94, off-roading, it didn't care.

I had a 740 wagon for a while, I would have loved to have small-blocked it. It had the 4 spd w/ overdrive, sunroof, heated leather, and every other option known to man. The only thing it lacked was power...

my 240 (non turbo) blew a head gasket... Right after driving the wife to the airport for her to be out of town for a 4 day weekend. Talk about planets aligning! when she returned, it was lowered by an inch, (koni's) I had flow matched and ported the heads (while raising the compression a tad) and I urethaned all rubber suspension points as well as added the turbo sway bars... still miss that station wagon!

It wasn't a rocket ship, but it was fun as hell.

Just in case you wondered why the beer tastes so bad at Pints, it is rumored their brewing equipment and or taps are contaminated. All of their beers taste rancid/bad/infected. Not kidding. A few years ago their stuff was great. I recently went to give them another try and my wife and I each ordered a beer which we could not finish, tried two others which we left full also. Sad. Several others on the Beer Advocate forum have reported the same. I guess they are floating by on their scotch selection only.

Sounds like some maintenance of the taps/lines and valves is in order!

I know the owner of pints personally. I can tell you that I highly doubt this. half of their product is cask conditioned. different casks can provide different flavors, however I don't think this would account for it all. I'll somehow politely try and find the scoop.

It's a loose organization but Brett Borders continues to help keep the club going. He's also a great resource if you ever have any questions about any year Volvo. This past summer the club did a couple Wednesday night test and tune events at Bandimere. This Saturday is a Dyno day, on Sunday, 1/25, some folks are going to attend the Denver All-Euro GTG and we're also planning on going to the Shelby American Museum soon.

The next meeting will NOT be at Pints Pub! Location TBD.

Three of their beers are cask. I have been to Pints dozens of times, and the last three times all of the beers I've tried have had the same bad taste. I'm not an idiot, I brew my own beer and I know what OFF flavors taste like. Something is wrong there with either thier equipment, yeast or brewer.

I WANT to like Pints Pub. It's a cool local pub that could be great with some good beer. Unfortunately, their beer sucks o-ring right now.

What does he think it's worth?

There was a mint 1973 with only 60,000 original miles for sale on CL in Golden on and off for the last year. He was asking $6500.

What kind of condition is this one in?
