View Full Version : Question re: Fuel Tank

I have the fuel tank out of this 1980 FJ40. The filler neck is in the same location as my 74 but the tank it mounted outside and underneath. I would really like to get rid of the stock tank I have under the passenger seat.
Does anyone know if this fuel tank will fit under my 40 without major mods?

In short: No.
Mods will be required.
Anything wrong w/ stock tank?

I have checked it for leaks many times, have re-sealed the sending unit and I still get a gas stink in the cab, plus the fuel gauge is inaccurate. I suspect the sending unit is bad.
I was hoping to avoid the cost of buying a new, long range fuel tank that mounts underneath in the rear but I really need a fuel gauge that works and no fumes in the cockpit.

you will have to swap out at least the floor of the 80 series. maybe some crossmembers/brackets underneath also.

That looks like an excellent solution, if you want it to smell like twice as much gas inside your 40.:thumb::lmao:

Agreed, so I ordered one of the 22 gal units from Downey that mounts up underneath.
