so...me-thinks the starter is dead on the 40. solenoid doesn't seem to want to catch (or whatever). banged it real good. no workie. Would a starter from an FJ60 work on that? I feel like the FJ60 starter is a GR style and some say is 'better'.

Any insight on whether that would work, is it better or worth putting in an FJ60 starter?

thanks!

I'm with UB. The GR starter from a 60 series goes right in place of the current starter. It is a very straight forward swap, the hardest part was getting the old starter off. The new one is smaller and pops right in. If you are going to replace, definitely go with the 60 series gear reduction.

agreed!!

and if you need a spare until you find a GR you can use one of my old ones

Late to this thread, but will chime in, yes it drops right in there and is a nice upgrade.
