View Full Version : Looking at a 97' LC tonight...

04-09-2009, 02:00 PM
I'm going to look at an 1997 LC tonight....It has new stock springs and OME shocks, non-winch ARB, 285/75/16 BFG ATs....service history of tranny flush every 30k miles, Mobil 1 syn every 4k, new starter contacts, front & rear completely rebuilt axles at 70k miles but needs the 60k mile tune-up....been garaged and very clean looking

Should I be looking for anything specific....the head gasket and water pump are original but owner claims they don't seep/leak at all...

Thanks and hopefully I'll be driving home tonight in it

How many total miles are on it today?

Personally the 60k mile tune-up "miss" isn't that big of a deal unless it has 120K now. Basically spark plugs, wires, pcv, etc.

As for specifics to look at, I'm not an expert but even though the owner said the axles were serviced check them to see if it looks like they did a thorough job or just repacked the bearings and installed new wipers. Check the coolant condition, look under the oil cap and on the dip stick for any signs of coolant, check the ATF fluid for color/smell, etc. etc. If you have time you could even do the bubble test to check for a possible HG issue.

If it has lockers, find a dirt area and see if they'll engage. You might even want to check the center diff locking function if the 80 doesn't have lockers as it is often not exercised (could be a simple exercise issue to get it to lock but could offer you some haggling room on the price :))

Good luck and post up pictures!!

Thanks guys....printed and read over what you posted on the drive last night and looked the LC over for about 2 hours.....completed all the little "tests" and it passed....

The owner provided me with every service record from 30k miles and he went above and beyond on most (axles were done completely, every part checked and replaced if accordingly)…

Drove it home last night and will post pictures later today….

Thanks again!

That's a great looking Cruiser. Buy some sliders and you are ready to wheel it on 80% of the trails in Colorado!

Thanks guys...its been a fun couple days with the LC already...

I will be completing a tune-up, all fluids will be changed/flushed and have been looking into the Slee step sliders as it is our family car and the step is needed for my wife....

Nice. I just bought one recently from a Rising Sun member and happy with it.
If you have the time you could update this spreadsheet (http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/276730-online-spreadsheet-80s-4-sale-usa.html) and help others see what 80s are selling for.

Brendan...updated the spread for you

Changed the oil and filter this evening and ordered the parts for a tune-up...there is a good deal on Valvoline oil right now at Checker Auto, buy 4 get 1 free for a heads up to anyone needing an oil change :)
