View Full Version : Depart South out of Elephant Hill ?

We'd like to depart out of EH on Saturday South on "Butler Flat Rd" home (no reason for us to drive up North and allow us to explore further). Do CM organizers have any issues with this?

I'm not sure who all is around from the CM committee or when they might see this but I'll give my shot at an answer based on my experience at the past couple of years at CM...
I assume you are running EH on Saturday, and rather that return to Moab with the group, you want to head south for home? I don't think there would be any issues with that as long as you inform the trail leader of your intentions at the start of the run and again when you are leaving the group run so they are not looking for you...
I guess I don't see this as any different than if you were running a trail to the north of Moab and after the run, instead of returning to Moab, you headed north to I70 and home if you lived in Denver. I have not run EH yet so maybe expectations are a little different...
If you depart via a different trail, you're on your own and no longer
a part of Cruise Moab -- so it won't affect our permit. You'll want to
check with the park rangers to make sure that the trail is open and
drivable. Is the trail easy enough to safely drive alone? We'd hate
for you to get stuck when you're on your own. We always try to
maintain the buddy system. But again, this would be your call.

I have a travel colleague who will be meeting us via Beef Basin so would not be alone and should the track not be passable (like by Bobby's Hole) then no harm in following everyone out.
See y'all soon.

I am tailgunning E-Hill on saturday. Make sure you got your route set and all things you need in place. If you do split, let me know your plans. Make sure you communicated this to either myself or our leader (day of).

I will by all means let you know full plans, know the area fairly well.
Last time I ran EH with CM was in 2002 IIRC, what is our South-most turning point? I forget is it Chesler Park?

Yup! you are correct. See you in a few days. Drive safe.

I can't stress this enough - COMMUNICATION!
Please, let everyone in the group know what you are thinking so people aren't scratching their heads and sending out the saint bernards.

South out through beef basin.
Really cool. Bobby's hole is little more than a break (hole) in a big fin between grabens.
It is 2 Wheel drive most of the time, but....
I tried to go out the south way years ago over spring break. I hit snow on the shady side of the mountain. It got deeper and deeper but I kept going all 4 spinning up the mountian in the snow. There were no winch points at the top which was drifted in up to my waist. I had to back down about 1/2 a mile in my own tracks until I got to a place I could turn around in the snow without risk of getting stuck.
Now I'm REALLY worried about fuel and it is dark and raining. I made it back to pavement, but nearly ran out of fuel.
There are some really cool ruins out there too.

Yep, I figure if my travel colleague runs into problems coming up there or we see snow on the way up on Wed then no problem, worse case is we head back out to 211 with the group. No loss in any way.
I've never done the trip South in May, always in the hot of June many years ago.
