I hear there's a mod where a person could reverse the mounting brackets for the driver seat of an FJ40 and it yields more leg room. Anybody have any more info on that? It would seem to me that a custom bracket/extension would have to also be fabbed in order to make that work...

EDIT: found this thread: http://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/201865-seat-braket-reversal-more-leg-room.html

All you do is flip the rear brackets 180 and add a small scrap of metal to the front. You can look at my 40 or I can take a few pics.

In addition to what Mike recommended, Classic Cruisers (http://www.classiccruisers.com/pages/customparts.html) in Salida makes a kit to move the seat back a few inches. They list it at the bottom of the page. Might be worth giving them a call.

Pics...

I moved the front bracket rearwards and didn't add a strip of metal there but I did add one on the other side. You can see what it would look like in Nakman's pic above.

Heater under the front seat? Was that the FJ40 version of heated seats? :hill:

The seat mod isn't needed on the later models ('79 and later). My 1981 vintage FJ40 has tons of leg room.

On the down side, there is no room under the seats for a heater (or something else -- I used to keep a box of tools under my seat in my 1975 FJ40).

There's another common mod that adds more leg room, which is to simply raise the height of the seats. I've seen it on several 40s and it does the same thing. You can use some square tube set on its side for the spacer.

Ah yes, I may have to incorporate a little bit of both of those mods. The stock seats are awfully low. Of course I could get some aftermarket seats to put in as well.

Thats what I did. I got 2 seats out of an 88 4Runner for $75. I used about $30 worth of angle iron from Home Depot and about 3 hours of cutting and minor welding to build some really strong mounts. I easily have 6" more leg room now than before and the seats have good bolsters to hold you in place.

You can also improve your leg room situation a little by replacing the stock steering wheel with a smaller diameter aftermarket unit.
