Spindle nut and washer kit - locking hubs
 
Anyone know what the story is with this part?

Indication from the Warn website (and others) is that this is necessary when converting from "Factory Automatic Hubs, You Must Also Purchase Spindle Nut Conversion Kit PN[29918] (Except for ADD)" to install nanual locking hubs.

Looks like the "kit" is just hub nuts, star washers, and another washer?

This would not affect a truck with manual hubs already or one with drive plates (be it ADD or not). This would only affect some (mini only AFAIK) trucks that had automatic hubs. Those are the ones that pop lock when you engage 4WD and unlock by backing up. It's a relatively small number of 1986 thru 1995 Hiace vans and Hilux trucks. They didn't use the thrust washer, star washer and locking nuts like regular trucks.

I have Ford experience on the kit. The Bronco originally had automatic hubs, when I made the conversion to manual, I needed the kit. In actual practice the you pay for convenience by using a kit; as the parts can be sourced from any axle in a junkyard.

Thanks Dave. Odd that Warn lists it as an exception for 76-87 Cruisers. I don't believe any came with those dealios you posted up. Just plates and then Aisin hubs...I thought.

Dunno about Cruiser effectivity, I've only seen them on pickups and vans mostly.

I have gone back and forth between Warn and OEM hubs on a '78 FJ40 and never needed any kits or adapters.

I find that Warn frequently specifies that these kits are needed, when they are not. I did not need the kit on my '83 GMC when I went from automatic hubs to Warn manuals.

As Dave in Denver said, I suspect it's needed for an odd corner-case, but not for regular old FJs.

Yea - the hubs installed fine without any extras.
