Canyonlands Maze District April 2010
I have been planning this trip for two years and finally got everything lined out to make it happen.
We met up with some friends from Aspen in Hanksville UT after a long drive from Ft Collins. When we got there the wind was screaming and it was freezing cold, not looking good for heading out into the desert.:(
We had met the other family that was joining us for the trip at Cruise Moab a couple of years ago and we had been talking about the Maze since last summer. Nick had been working feverishly on completing his off road pop up camper for the trip and this was the maiden voyage.
The next day we awoke to a perfect day, after breakfast at Blondes (awesome) we were off. We had to travel down to Hite to enter the canyonlands because the Flint trail was blocked with a rockslide and snow.
Then we had to wait to use the only payphone around by the ranger station so that we could be issued our permit over the phone. The guy on the phone was talking to his wife about the direct TV bill and how much snow they got, blah, blah blah... don't these people know I have been waiting two years for this adventure to begin! Finally they got off the line and I could talk with the ranger and get our permit finalized. We were off...
I thought these driving times were BS but it turns out they are pretty close...
It took us 5 hours to get in and about 4 on the way out, having trailers really slowed us down but anyway it is still a long drive on a bumpy road. It was 50 miles from Hite to the Dollhouse on my odometer.
The first 30 miles are fast paced on smooth dirt and sand...
Around Teapot Rock the road gets rougher and the speed drops way off.
Making the Z turn with a trailer was a new one for me...
The view just kept getting better the deeper we traveled into the park
We spent 1 night at Chimney rock and 2 at Dollhouse #3
Do you see the pop up camper? Dollhouse 3 was a very cool campsite with great views...
One cool thing for the Hams out there, from the dollhouse I was able to make contact with Grand Junction repeater on the 70cm!
It was a great trip that went by way too quick...
brings back great memories of Outlaws Run 2008! http://www.risingsun4x4club.org/foru...&referrerid=43
Awesome trip! It's definitely on my to do list.
cool, one of the places I need to get to.
where is this pic, doll house?
What an adventure for sure! I'm jealous.
Envious. Thanks for sharing. Did you see anyone else while you were in there?
Wow. I need to do this. Awesome pics, Will!
Ditto all of the comments! Looks like a great trip, and a bit of a challenge with a trailer...
Cool trailers too :)
Thanks for the comments!
That's a trip I've been wanting to do for years. Will have to wait a few more now until Bridger is a little older, and I have a cool trailer too:thumb:
Post up some more pics
