FJ40 Storage idea... What do you think?

I am always looking for any way to add storage to my 40. During the summer I like to have everything out of plain sight but still accessable. I have never had a problem with theft, nor do I wish to start.

I had an idea today as I was looking through a Midway USA catalog at carbine storage cases. What if I bolted one of these to my summer tailgate and used it as a soft storage spot for things like, jumper cables, first aid, tow strap a shackle or two, a tool wrap etc...

What do you think? If I punch a few holes, add a few grommets, and perhaps add a stiffening sheet of some sort to spread the load, I think it'd work... pretty well actually.

What do you think? I am afraid of attracting attention just because it looks tacti-cool and "there could be a firearm in there!" I don't want people snooping around because they think there is something more valuable to steal.

What do you think, I can land one for around 50-60 bucks, and I think it'd really fit the "summer-time tailgate" season well. Especially since you could add other pouches as needed for different things, like a nalgene bottle, or radio's... the possibilities seem endless.

Great plan! Make yourself a tonneau cover! What isn't seen is usually safe!

Thats true UB. Thanks!

I am trying to gauge if the fabric and craftsmanship can handle UV and constant bouncing off road... otherwise I am going for it. I am going to swing into Boulder Gun Sport tomorrow and see if they have a few I can kick the tires on.

There is/was a company in Denver that made cases for AR-type rifles. They were widely sold at local gun shows for reasonable money - less than $60 for sure. I think it's a pretty decently shaped/configured case and a great idea. I'd also pick black over camo, as camo sends a message if spotted. I would try to attach it such that when the gate is shut, the bag/case is resting on the floor of the truck so that the constant bouncing doesn't tear it from the gate.

It may be a bit more pricey but MPAC makes a product just for this spot on the Jeeps and dont see why it wont fit other aps. you can mix and match your bag choices and put a lot of stuff there. I believe it is www.springtailsolutions.com. i have one in the back of the FJC that holds the little stuff like the first aid kit. just a thought. Not much fab work needed then.

Thanks Kevin, but the shipping would kill me. Wouldn't it?

I also like that this could be still in use and accesssed from the top... even with a rear seat installed.

A little more money and you could score one of those Hardigg surplus military cases and just bolt it to the tailgate like you're thinking. Water proof and you can even put a lock on it. I'm planning to pick up some of the squarer cases and use them in my 40 for camping gear.

Martin, where are you sourcing those? I like that I can open the soft cases from the top and store stuff down inside them. My tailgate is fixed and doesn't fold down, otherwise that'd be a sweet setup.

What do they typically run $$$?
