FJ40 PS question (FJ60 stuff)
 
To make a long story short...the PS pump input shaft seal blew while I was in moab so I'm in the midst of replacing the pump and steering box on my FJ60. That means I'll have (I hope) a rebuildable pump and box. Question is, can I even install an FJ60 setup on my 40 if I have a winch (m8000) mounted with this up front? http://coolfj40.stores.yahoo.net/winmounchan.html

I've tried to figure out where stuff goes, but I'm pretty much clueless. the other option is the mini truck setup which should work with my winch mounting.

I see Giraffe has some of the other parts if I could do this upgrade.

IIRC, I used a 60 pump in my 40. It's nowhere near the winch.

Sorry, I went back and checked and I used an FJ80 box. Although I believe they are similar and would mount in the same place.

Shawn, you would have no issues mounting a 60 box on your 40. It's basically straight inboard of the front of the front tire, on the outside of the frame.

Minitruck is WAY easier BTW...

Does your block have the holes tapped for the FJ60 power steering pump? IIRC yours is a '77 so it will be like mine, which doesn't have those holes. So you would probably want to go with something like this...

Or at least get the pump bracket from them and use a Saginaw pump (which is what I did)...

For some reason I placed the box up front between the rails. I've always envisioned minitruck conversion in my 40 and will probably go that route in the end especially after reading more on the fj60 conversion. I think that's a little over my head.

I have been trying to get around to this conversion on my 40 for sometime. After talking to some people in the club there seems to be a consensus that 33" tires are the tipping point. 33" or smaller go mini. 35" and larger go with a Saginaw. I have read about the 60 PS conversation but don't know if it would be strong enough to handle 35". I have not heard of an 80 PS in a 40 does it / can it work?

I went saginaw and really like it. Plenty of power to turn the bigger tires and parts are available every where and easy to find.

I've heard the same thing, which I why I'm leaning toward the Mini conversion. I'm currently on 32s and don't see myself going larger than 33s on my 40 anytime soon. IIRC, Rezarf has the mini PS on his 40 with 35s...he says it's been fine so far.

I think I'll hold out to do the 'easier' route, as I'm trying to start doing more things on my own. :o

What year is your FJ40? I did the mini-truck power steering conversion on my 71 and because the steering shaft was one piece into the steering box, I had to source a steering shaft from a later 40 which complicated things just a bit.

I went the mini-truck route because I could get it done without having to do any welding.

Everything works just fine, but at some point in the future, I'd like to do Saginaw as it is fewer components in the steering linkage, i.e. fewer things to wear out.

Really the reason to use the fj60/scout or saginaw is getting rid of the center arm and extra linkage. I'mho the boxes are fine to 35;s + but the toyota pumps are weak. I would run a saginaw box vs a toyota.
