Tires: rethreads - any opinons
 
With the big jump in tire prices recently I'm considering re-threads but have had no experience.

Any opinions on the following?

Also looked at a few second-hand tire stores but most have very little available on-line and all require some legwork (aka visiting/walking)

Personally (and with a disclaimer of no first hand experience) I would only run re-treads at lower speeds where failure would likely be less catastrophic. I figure if a tire carcass has already been run 30-60k over 3-6 years, not sure I would want to continue to run that for twice that long. That being said if I had a town/trail rig those 315 mtr look alikes are priced pretty low.

You'll never see retreads on my rig.

My brother has those on his Xterra, no problems so far. I've read that accident from ih8mud also, so who knows? I think Woody also runs them on his, might have to search mud for the thread, I think it was a year or so back.

I don't know anything about Treadwright's specifically, but I do know a lot of your big over-the-road trucks run retreads. They have improved the retreading processes dramatically in the last 10 years so they should be much safer than before.

One of the keys to a safe retread is the condition of the carcass. On the big trucks they wear the tires out pretty quick so they are retreading carcasses that are usually only 1 to 2 years old. However on a car tire it could be a lot older and you can't always tell if there is damage within the steel bands in the carcass. Thats why occassionally a retread will fly apart.

Honestly, as competitive as the Big O and Discount tire prices are, I would probably be inclined to buy a new, less expensive model from them first. That way you get a new tire with a road hazard warranty on it.

I have had a set on my 99 Dodge, they were JUNK. I took them off with in 200 miles

and you don't see any where near as many "gators" on the road, but you do still see them. also, they are not legal to run on single tire axles for big rigs. remember, if one blows, you could die. is your life worth that?

Interesting .. will look some more at lower tires and see what I can find in AT range
