Arch Canyon, UT - April 2011

Us and Our neighbors headed out to Arch Canyon this weekend. Just a quick couple of days out of town. Weather was good until noon on Sunday otherwise we would have headed up to Hotel Rock too.

We camped at the mouth of Arch Canyon. Lots of space there for a larger group. Next time I'm there I want to camp at the end of the 4x4 trail and spend more time exploring the top of the canyon by foot.

There's a great campsite up there with room for 4 rigs comfortably. Maybe as many as 8 if your traveling light and don't mind being packed in tight. There really is not anywhere good to camp along the way up.

I did not take many pics but enjoy the few I got. First group a little break to stop and feed Bridger.

Few more from the end of the 4x4 trail. It is an easy trail just really narrow. Don't take anything up there that won't like a fresh set of pin stripes. The vegetation is tight. My HAM antenna took a severe beating.

Last few. Clearing in the trees is the campsite at the top. You can see one of the arches from there. Water was flowing but no much. I would not wanted to be up there relaying on the creek for a water supply. But it had a few pools big enough for a doggy dip to cool off. Deepest water crossing for us was maybe a foot deep. Banks showed the potential of much higher water though.

Great pics Corbet! I loved that trail when I did it a couple years ago as part of Cruise Moab! The water was flowing a little bit more that year!

Looks like fun. That's an area I've been wanting to check out for years. Looks like a perfect long weekend spot to take the fam. :thumb:

Looks like a scenic easy trail... any issues for stock vehicles?

Thanks for the pics, it looks great!

There were some drops into the creek that could possibly scrape, say, the rear overhang on your Sequoia. But IIRC it's mostly sand, so all you'd really need to worry about is the pinstripes from overgrown foliage. There were rules a couple years ago about how far you could drive up, especially with a group, due to owl nesting or something. Not sure if it's the same. All I know is that there were people picketing Arch Canyon's use by 4x4 vehicles on a Wednesday morning when I ran it with some of the Wasatch boys. Wondered if those people had actual jobs? Some rangers watched pretty closely too, I believe they caught up to us while we were eating lunch at the end of the trail just to make sure everything was hunky dory.

We camp and hike/4x4 Arch canyon quite often. For years the "Old Wilderness Broads" have been trying to close the trail, luckely they have not yet suceeded. Also where are the pictures of the ruins on the upper ledges ah, missed them, most people do. Part way up the canyon one on the right we call the jail house and a large set of ruins on the left.

Nice pics. Most of the scratches on my 80 are courtesy of Arch Canyon. Nice scenery, but you wouldn't want to take a freshly painted truck on that trail.
