Balsam Mountain Road, Great Smokey Mountains NP

During our cross country trip to Myrtle Beach this month we spend some time at Great Smokey Mountains National Park. Its the closest thing we did to any wheeling. Just a scenic drive but on a one way dirt road. About 28 miles worth of forest driving under a 100' canopy of trees. A great escape from the tourist clogged paved roads in the park.

Enjoy the pics

Awesome! Brings back good memories. Thanks for the pictures!

I spent many years exploring that area and lived in Maryville for a while. :)

How'd you like driving the Tail of The Dragon ? :)

I have managed to get every vehicle I have owned except for the 40 out on that road.

Did you guys do the cherohala skyway?

not sure what you are referring to with Tail of the Dragon?

We entered the park through Gatlinburg. Drove a small portion of the Little River Rd to access a trail head. Then turned around to drive the Newfound Gap Rd. Did the hike at the top to the observation platform (Clingman's Dome). Then spent the night in Cherokee. Next morning used part of the Blue Ridge Parkway to get to Balsam Mtn Rd. Then drove down to Charleston, SC that night after visiting some family in Asheville, NC on the way.

Really a short visit in the park.

yikes, nevermind, I thought you were talking about another road in the park, parsons branch road. It's a similar one way that dumps you out on HWY 129 which is also known as the tail of the dragon. 318 corners in 11 miles, it's really twisty.
anyways, I'm glad you guys got out there :)

If we would have had more time I would have like to do that one too. Someday we will go back in the fall for a backpacking trip. Lower temps, less bugs and some beautiful fall colors.

Tail of the Dragon was my dream ride wen I was road racing, never got to do it :( I would still love to visit the area and do a drive like you did Corbet, forests like that remind me of Europe :)
