yaesu ft-51r

Any opinion on a Yaesu ft-51r HT? There is one on Craig's list for $85 like new. Was thinking about giving a call, but wanted some opinions considering it's age.

Thanks,

No firsthand experience here, but if it's anything like other Yaesu radios it's likely pretty solid. This thread seems pretty thorough.. http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/376

Thanks. I looked at that thread earlier which made me thing to go for it. ;)

Solid radio, full duplex BTW similar to a VX-7R but sized more like a FT-60. Battery pack was NiCad, which was less ideal and the AA adapter only took 4 cells, so reduced power. Maybe there are aftermarket NiMH packs now, though.

It had a funky, cool hand mic with an LCD display that showed some of the same stuff as the front display. If you get the radio, it's worth watching for the MH-29A2B for it.

Well, someone must have gotten a good radio :-(

Bummer. My advice is buy this FT-1900 for $75 and install it in the truck http://denver.craigslist.org/ele/3884341297.html

Then get one of those cheap Baofeng's for your first HT... but spend most of your time setting up and learning to operate the mobile FT-1900.

edit: Interesting, he's got a 2900 too for $100? http://denver.craigslist.org/ele/3884325912.html Get both of them.. :) almost a no-risk deal as those are both great deals, you could try both out then sell the other to someone else in the club here for even money. I'd pick it up but I already have 2 2800's I don't use...

He's also selling a FT-857.

That is a great price for that radio. Would love to buy it but haven't achieved my license yet. I am studying for it. I will pay for it if someone wants to buy it and hold it until I get my license. Great study motivator.

You don't need a license to purchase a Ham radio. You can even install and listen until your licensed.

The seller states in all his posts that he will only sell to a licensed operator.
