Red Cone 7-6-2013

Red Cone was awesome today. The weather was great (except for the usual icy wind up top). The trail was totally clear of snow and only muddy in spots.

Travis (Shotshell), Nick Andrews and I arrived at the trailhead and aired down.

Then, just as we were about to head up the trail, we had a visitation. A built red 40 came rolling up. It was Dave Brown in Red Fox, come to run Red Cone with us!

I only took a few pics.

The trail was a little busy but not too bad. Lots of nice folks using the trail correctly, and everyone we met was courteous and considerate. The great day was only marred by the traffic on I-70. An hour from Georgetown to Idaho Springs ... on a Saturday no less. Oh well, small price to pay for a day on the trail in the Rockies! :thumb:

FANTASTIC RUN!

Had a fenomenal time today.

We all met up at the trailhead and aired down, and then headed up the trail.
It was relatively uneventful. A couple bumps and scrapes was all the damage we incurred. Which was good.
I have to say that this was definitely the coolest run I've been on in a very long time. Beautiful ascent, and adrenaline pumping descent. Can't wait to run it again.

We pulled off on a small spur on the far side and had lunch, and talked about wheeling and the like for awhile. Then we rolled out through Montazuma and onto Loveland Pass.

I-70 was a parking lot at George Town. So I decided to jump off and run up Guanella Pass road instead. I wanted to go check out Naylor lake which I had seen on the GPS weeks earlier. Turns out it's on private property. :( But, I ran into JadeRunner up there. So that was cool to get to say hey.

Special thanks to MountainGoat for leading out on Red Cone today.
And thanks to RedFox for letting me air up off his rig. (His "RedFox" 40 is about the coolest rig I've ever had the pleasure of running with. That thing has more gizzmos and gadgets than a James Bond Car):thumb:

Was the way back to 285 through Webster pass blocked by snow? Kind of looks that way. Sarah and I are thinking of heading up next Saturday or the one after. Ne less traffic on 285 on a Saturday. I-70 has the construction

Looks like fun!

Yes, in some of those pictures, you can see the huge snow bank still blocking the return route through the valley.

MountainGoat 07-07-2013 09:35 PM

I would think next Saturday might be a long shot. The drift at the top of Webster is still pretty big. That said, at the rate things have been been going, you have a pretty good chance of having it cleared by the Saturday after. You might want to walk it to the washout before you commit to driving down it. I heard that it was better last year. Two years ago when I ran it, it was pretty bad. I decided not to drive it again until it was repaired.

If you do go and you can't get down Webster, hopping off I70 at Georgetown and coming over Guanella Pass to 285 would be a viable alternative. Or if Radical Hill is open by then you could always come down Swan River into Jefferson and hit 285 there. (Radical was still drifted in yesterday, too.)

Snowdrift & Washout

Attachment 33600 This is looking from the top of Red Cone towards the snowdrift / washout areas. I70 was a parking lot...I jumped on the frontage road and was fine though, so worst case that could be an option if you have to take I70.

One of my all time favorite trails! Nice pics.

Even the first time we went over the washout last year was sketchy. They repaired it pretty well by mid season though. Of the 5 or 6 times I've driven over that, I've enjoyed it exactly ZERO times.

Ken, I'm up for running with you. Let me know.

Sarah and I are planning for Saturday the 20th. Ill start a thread that week

Caribou Sandstorm 07-08-2013 03:01 PM

Paul, Barry and me were up there last week, as well. Fun trail, seemed a bit more rutted out in sections than years past.

Bent my lower link pretty good somewhere up there.

I doubt Webster will be open for a while, unless they clear it, that snow bank was huge.
