Take the deal on 4.88s or wait on 5.29s

I found a set of rear and front R&P's Yukon 4.88 (never install) with all new bearings and races for $250. Probably will still need some kind of overhaul kits for shims and such( not very knowledgeable about diffs).

Am I really saving that much to grab this or should I wait and buy the 5.29s

My vechicle description is in my signature.

ran 4.88's for years with 35's, 37's slowed me down but it was tolerable. If you're on 33's you'll love them. If you move up to 35's I think you'll still be plenty happy.

what are brand new ones going for, is it a great deal at 250 or just so/so? How much more would it be to run over to 4wp and buy 5.29's?

Being a 4 cylinder you might want to wait. Though, if you only stay with 33s the 4.88s will not be bad at all. Just to compare, my 83 with no power runs 4.88s and 33s without much issue. It feels about like it should driving on the highway and in town.

If you do pass, could you put me in contact with that deal? My 96 could use new gears.

Holy crap, that is a good deal! Almost too good. 250 is what you'd pay for each gear set new, and then add bearings on top: the guy is discounting it over 50%. Go for it as long as you are sure there isn't anything wrong with them.

Assuming you stick with 33's (Easier on the front end of your truck) then yeah, the 4.88's are going to be real nice.

Thanks for replies. I'm going to go look at them. He even knows its over 50% discount. If I have to buy the master overhaul kit it's $350 for rear alone w/ elocker. So the actual gears are the low cost item in this mod.

Hopefully I ll be getting a Tacobox soon so this is for hwy driving TO Moab and hauling an ATV.

May have an adapter for sale soon, if I sell my truck. I'll let you know if I decide to go that route.

Dang.... Too good to be true. He had two sets of rear gears. And no front. I told him I'd let our group know and see if any takers.

Looks like it was a no go but if you want 5.29's wait. Its a big expensive job to save $250 for a set your didn't really want. And yes the OEM locker gear set up kits are expensive. I know all too well.

AxleIke 07-27-2013 08:31 AM

How much does he want for just one set? 125?

I thought this was a good deal:

Toyota 5.29 Brand New Yukon Gears/Install Kit $300

http://fortcollins.craigslist.org/pts/3881963951.html

...but $250, for 2, wow!

I was saving for those but yesterday I traded my xrc8 winch for an open 5.29 3rd. I put the 5.29 LSD I got from baja1d, in the back, last night. Oh it's soooo nice, and my A340 is a lot happier now. I'm only on 32's, but 5.29's feel great and it's nice to know I'm geared to go to 35's in the future. For such a foundational upgrade, I'd stick to looking for 5.29's. I just need to get the front in now, I'm like a 2wd guy, for the moment. And I need spacers for the front now since I used the IFS rear.
