Heading to New Zealand for a month. Suggestions?

I am going to NZ for a month for work from early March to early April.

I gotta work the first 3 weeks, but should have some limited time on the weekends to get out around the Wellington area, and then I'm flying my wife down the last week and we'll be touring around.

We've got travel books and the like, but first hand recommendations are always appreciated. So, for anyone who has been there, if you have a place, or places, that are absolutely must see, please let me know. Given that we have limited time (her job doesn't have vacation, so she can't take more than a week) we can only hit a few areas, so we'd like to make them really good ones!

Thanks!

Go do the ferry out to the Tasmanian Sea that goes along the glacier, that is spectacular.....

Go fishing...New Zealand has world class fishing lakes and a super small population, so the fish are abundant and humongous..

I have been to Auklund, Christchurch and a few other places there, I can't recall. Played Rugby there a long, long time ago.. Like when you and Marco were 5 years old... lol

Go see an All Blacks Rugby game, national heroes there. It is a very beautiful and lush green land. The local Maori culture are very nice and welcoming.

Jealous....

That is a long plane flight by the way.. Like a whole day to get there..

Also watch the clouds they go the other way across the sky, as does the water circling the toilet bowl...

Tour the south island. The whole island is beautiful.

Went to Christchurch a year ago, beautiful public gardens and museum, but sad to see the state of the city after the earthquakes. Like a war zone. They have low volume toilets so I didn't get to experience the opposite rotation thing. Mt Cook was amazing if you're into alpinism/hiking at all, and there are a couple beautiful lakes on the drive there from chch. If you can by any means possible get to the fiordlands that sounds like the place to be. Have fun, it's a 13 hour flight from San Fran to Auckland.

have a great trip. such a cool place. use your downtime on the weekends to try and be as much of a local as possible. i'll always get advice on what to do from the folks i'm working with and have found some definite gems that way over the years.

Take a good camera and buy a souvenir you'll enjoy in your home.

Would agree. Not only do as the locals do, but the same advice goes for dining. Don't go to the starbucks or the McD's. You can do that at home. Try eating as the locals do and enjoy the environment that you're in. You will bring home much more memories that way.

we use http://www.imoova.com/imoova/relocations to get a campervan from Christchurch to Aukland. They need them moved from one direction to the other with the changing seasons. The ferry from N to S island is silly expensive to bring a car across. (Like $250)

The highlights for me were heli-hike at Fox Glacier, Sea Kayaking Able-Tasman, glow-worm cave inner-tube ride. Drinking white wine, cooking and eating lamb and other assorted meat sausages. The hot spring can be nice also.

The luge ride in Rotarua is awesome. http://www.skyline.co.nz/rotorua/dea...Fa5DMgod4x4ALw

I'd skip Queenstown- it's just like any ski resort in CO.
