Hemmings Motor News Prediction

From the March 2014 edition of Hemmings, the world's largest collector-car marketplace:

"The Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser will become the next Volkswagen 21-Window Samba Bus. In the past three years, prices for restored VW buses have shot through the roof, with the rarest examples realizing six-figure prices at auction. I wouldn't be surprised if an FJ40 topped $100,000 at auction in 2014."

The "I" in the blurb is Hemmings blogger, Kurt Ernst.

I would rather they stay hidden away like they were before the hype set in.

Its a double edged sword. More popularity and higher prices means that the average guy can't afford them, but other the other hand broader popularity means that there is more money and money attracts vendors, shops, and parts suppliers. Land Cruisers have no Crown Automotive equivalent like Jeeps do, and that is something that would be a game changer. So bring the money, maybe we can start buying parts again.

It has more implications beyond that. While it's nice to have the increased value, it also means that they become more of a target for theft. And for those of us who still enjoying "using" the 40, now we have to weigh the ramifications of theft or damage. For example, mine is pretty clean, so is it really wise to keep desert running it like I have been? I'm generally pretty careful, but rolling a classic would suck.

High resell value is one reason vehicles are targeted for theft but probably the exception rather than the rule. Those of us with crappy mini trucks know that even if yours is half beaten back into elemental iron it might still be stolen while you run into the 7-11 just so some jackass can get a starter for $10 from a chop shop.

I'm of the opinion that stuff is made to be used. Never saw the point to sticking an expensive thing away just to prove you have made it. So to nice FJ40 owners using them like they are meant, like Mr. Drive Your Porsche In The Snow, I tip my hat.

I agree with using it Dave, where it gets tricky is with the insurance.
You can leave the agreed value at about ~$10k and drive it with that amount of coverage and be happy until something nasty happens...like what happened to Gary.
If you update the value to something closer to ~$60k (where my 45 is valued with insurance) then it comes with nasty mileage & use restrictions.
So, the question isn't just use/not use, but it's taking into consideration the risk if you have a problem. That guy driving the porsche, is probably covered by insurance whether he drives it or not....unless it's an early 911RS! And to further complicate that, my insurance company won't cover my Porsche (if I had one) if I take it to a track day. I have never asked about off-roading the 40 or 45, but I wouldn't be that surprised if they limited that too.
