FJ40 Headlight

I was driving my FJ last night and an issue that I've been pondering reminded me to post here today for the group to help me with.

It seems something must be missing fromthe backside of my headlights inside the hood because I get bright light coming up through the hood vent slots on either side which you can see when you lean forward and look out the windshield.

Do you know if here should be some kind of headlight back plate or cover?

Thanks, LETSROLL

This passive underhood lighting is a standard feature of the FJ40...no cover was ever provided.

My 71 has a metal bucket behind each headlight; this feature is not present on my 76 or 78.

I only get light out of my driver side - my passenger side is blocked by my overflow bottle and some other stuff. It bothers me to not be symmetrical :(

Jeff wins - he's right - the old style buckets were solid. Guess they cut away the steel in the later years for a huge weight savings for fuel efficiency ;-)

Actually I was wrong - I just got done removing the headlight and bezel from my 1978 FJ45 (see my encounter with falling rock in the for sale/wanted section), and there is a bucket, it's just way different than the ones on my 1971. The 1971 buckets are hemispherical and more complete, the later model buckets are kind of stamped with shoulders, maybe a bigger hole where the connector goes. I'll put a couple photos up here when I take them, maybe later this evening.

Okay, pictures at 11. First shot is of the later style bucket. Note the large hole in the rear. With regular sealed beam lamps like they came from the factory with, there is considerable light that would leak back into the engine compartment.

The second photo is the back of my 71's buckets. As I remembered, they are more complete than the later style buckets, with only a small hole for the harness to feed through in the power rear through a rubber grommet.
