my advice would be to pick the smallest/lightest that will fit your needs. Especially if you will actually be leaving pavement and graded dirt roads.

Sounds like you have a bunch of corrosion at the connection to the battery on both the posts, and possibly inside the wire. Then when lifting the cable it contacts some of the broken/corroded pieces....

Check that the batteries have good voltage too.
