Technician license is #1 to earn. General is #2. So don't worry about the change in General tests -- you need to study the Technician manual and questions.

If you haven't re-geared, I would be cautious about moving up to 315s. The lack of power will bother you much more than you'll benefit from the gain in lift and wheeling advantage.

Seems like APRS is what everyone has been playing with. I haven't seen anyone messing with packet radio on the trail.
