I went to a local shop to try on boots and started with the low end ones. They felt like hightop sneakers. I wanted something that would protect my ankles. After working up to the nicest ones they had, Sidi and Gaerne, The Gaerne SG10s were the best fit. They're kinda like putting an ARB locker in your truck: it seems really expensive when you have to put up the money but once you've used it several times, you decide it was totally worth it.
the other thing to remember is that comfort is essential when you spend the whole day in them, also I've been riding mine for 4 seasons now and they have at least that much time left in them.
