Some I've seen are a heavy ring welded to the shifter with a padlock and chain that are just long to reach with the transmission in reverse.

For non-air bag cars one of coolest things are the Grant removable steering wheels. Dean clued me in years ago. This along with a couple of other things are probably enough for the majority of thefts. The truck could still be towed or dragged on a flat bed, but it's very difficult to smash and drive away with no wheel. The biggest worry I have with it is when you take off your nice Grant steering wheel you have to hide it so it doesn't get stolen...
