If you're willing to risk it, having the spare in the stock location is IMVHO actually a benefit since it acts like a cushion when you do drag and as long as you're in mild rocks and trees the chance of cutting the sidewall is a little lower. The upside is you put less shock through your bed and camper, so it lasts longer before starting to fatigue.
