Default What I did on my summer vacation...

Tag line on 40 meter 2 element homebrew monobander at 85 feet. Also note the lifting line from the top of the tower to the tower base and over to the 80.

Using the winch on the 80, the antenna went from ground level to 85 feet in about one minute.

And confidence, considering how close it is to the house!

Coax runs should be as short as is possible, whether it's up a tower on HF or under the hood of your vehicle on VHF.

The hobby is amateur radio, not telephone. Anyway, my station is setup for CW. Anybody can talk into a microphone...

Way

Any video of the raising? I'm trying to envision getting that bugger upright using an 80, a winch, and some guy wires...

Sorry, no video. A video would have been really nice. I gotta get one or "borrow" one from the kids.

To pull the monster up, we had a pulley at the top of the tower and a snatch block at the tower base. Our lifting line was connected to the 80's winch at one end, then thru the snatch block, up the tower and thru that pulley, then down to the truss at the lifting point on the antenna boom. The tower is free standing. No guy lines. One of us was on the 80 winch control, the other on the two tag lines that kept the antenna away from the tower as it made its way up the tower. We began work at 7:00 AM Sunday morning and were all done by 9:00 AM.

The tower grounding system consists of 250 feet of 1/4" diameter solid copper buried under the tower in a pattern like spokes in a wheel. Every 16 feet is an 8 foot copper ground rod buried in the ground and welded to the 1/4" diameter copper. Each of the two towers has such a grounding system.
