Default Open Water Swimming - 10k - 2006

Hey Crew,

Some of you might remember that I do some open water swimming and wrap up the season with a 10 kilometer swim in Horsetooth Reservoir in Colorado every year.

Well, we held our event last Saturday, 12 August and things went very well. We hosted the USMS Open Water Nationals this year, and that meant we could open up registration to 100 entrants vs. our cap of 50 that we had in the past.

The event filled in 1 month on Active.com, which is pretty fast considering this event used to be ~20 or so folks who thought it was a good thing to do for the community and a good swim.

We ultimately had 83 people start the race and 79 finish.

I finished 58th overall. I am glad I finished, but my time of 3:30:13 is not to my satisfaction. I wanted to beat my last year's time of 3:24. Everyone says the course is not the same year to year and the distances vary by a few hundred yards, but who cares?!? I wanted to crush my last year's time!

If anyone wants to see more, you can read results here: http://whswim.com/results/2006results.html
or read about the event and the fundraising we do for youth in Northern CO: www.whswim.com

Here is the event venue:

We have the highest altitude (over 5000 feet) Point-to-Point open water 10k West of the Mississippi!

This year the weather was beautiful! The start was a little overcast w/ temps in the 70's. Water temp was probably 70-72 degrees F.

I don't know if you all remember last year, but we had air temps in the 50's! It was drizzly and foggy the entire race. At the start when everyone swims out to meet up with their escort vessel, it reminded me of Titanic.

2005 start:

Thanks Kev - I appreciate the support.

It is/was a funny year since I have been the biggest advocate of pushing the fundraiser on the planning committee.

Sometime around May/June the founders of Wingshadow resigned. With no advance notice to us. They were getting a bunch of grief from the school districts about having faith-based elements of their program. Unfortunately, the school districts are/were big clients of theirs.

That left us in a pickle because we we use a lot of their volunteer force to execute the event, which in turn raises funds for them... Multiply the number of participants by 2x and you see how comfortable we were feeling...

So we found a new group to team up with: Team Fort Collins. They are a non-profit dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle through preventing the abuse and illegal use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs. They are a bunch of runners. They seem like a fine group, but we had to team up in the 11th hour, and I did not feel a comfort level that equated to me hitting friends and family for sponsorship this year.

Was that more info than you wanted?

I was wondering about this too. Glad you're still out there swimming away, d00d. I would drown.
