Indeed. Carbureted 1FZ circa 1995.

I think it would be great for kids. The only risk is the food - if your kids' diet consists of hot dogs and mac n cheese, it could be tough to please him/her. But we saw plenty of other kids (understanding this was the off-season), always felt safe, and most medium-sized towns had groceries and a decent pharmacy. We saw lots of poisonous snakes on the hikes we did, so that would be another consideration (a wandering kid could be a liability). But the opportunity to expose your kids to a different culture, different living situations, and people with a different style of living is invaluable.

We stayed out of the big cities though, so I can't say what those would be like.

We rented the same gen/color/powertrain/wheels Prado when we were there but ours had goofy aluminum running boards on it. I liked it a lot. It hauled the 6 of us and all our stuff all over and still got great fuel economy. I think grandma's white-knuckle finger marks might still be in the headrests.

I really liked all the 70's including Imperial beer trucks.

Default Nature too!

It's not all diesel and black smoke....

Arenal puffing.

Grasshoppa!

Eyelash Viper on our hiking trail near Arenal

Fer-de-lance just off the path on the same trail. This little guy (a kind of viper) accounts for the most venomous snake bites in all of CR. They are supposedly mean and nasty.

This pic is from our trip down there. The semi in front of the tow truck was sideswiped by another semi going the other direction on a 2 lane mountain road. I don't know if they planned to use the Cruiser tow truck to move anything as it looked way too small to be useful but I liked the cop leaning on it as the traffic slowly squeezed by.

I still think we should discuss a Rising Sun road trip to Costa Rica - possibly including a stop at Ron Korzen's place.
