Yep, sensor is way more sensitive to imperfections. Nice "un-scientific" study though. Not sure I could bring myself to destroy a lens...

I couldn't do that to a lens. The gal who took our last family photos had a filthy lens. I was surprised that you couldn't tell at all in the prints. I wonder how an unscientific low light test would turn out.

Default makes sense.

...I rarely clean my glasses and I've got two little ones. I see fine. but when I hold them further away from my eyes, they look filthy.

I have had the opportunity to see lenses from photojournalists. My glasses are cleaner then most of them. Now granted newspapers are probably more forgiving in print than other things. But man it blew me away. I don't use protective lens filters but use lens hoods instead. Don't seem to have a problem with scratching and I am brutal with my equipment.

Now as has been mentioned. The sensor. A totally different story.
