500pounds is the weight they can haul & still float in water, so that is their official weight capacity. But I've been told that they can haul way more on the road.

They can haul as much as you can put in them. 1/4 ton might only be how much a jeep can pull

During hunting season I have had 12" side boards on mine. They will definitely haul what you can load in them. My 47 Bantum has been abused for 60 plus years.

Negative. I have been regularly using mine to haul pallets of 80lb bags of mortar. That's 42 bags on a pallet! It definitely flattens the springs, but no signs of stress to the frame or axle. Even the michelins on it are rated at WAY higher than 1/4 ton.
