Default Traffic Ham

Anybody leave there HAM on during the morning and evening commute? Had mine on the last few days and all is quiet. Was hoping for some traffic updates on the way.

If you have APRS you can look for me (A C zero V H dash 9). I append the freq/tone/shift set on the main band (what I use as the main voice side) into #1 optional text field when it beacons. It should look like a comment on my position.

I usually ragchew during my commutes on 449.450, -5MHz, 103.5Hz. There is a regular crew.

Often there are also hams chatting on 145.310, 145.145, 145.460/147.225 or 449.350 most commutes. Just jump in, introduce yourself, most of them don't bite. Be aware though that every dang one of them WILL talk your ears off. :-)

146460 has some traffic up north that I pick up on occasion driving home, same two guys often ... talking about their honey-do-lists, and the weather, and their gout flare-ups, and and and

kind of entertaining sometimes.
if I'm in the 80 I have it on just cause

Last Friday Chris Davis and I thought we heard Dave on that frequency late afternoon....turned out to be those old guys. Too funny...
I don't have a big antenna, so my range is kind of limited (that's what she said)
but I've had it on club station the last few commutes.
Dave, not sure what all that is you just mentioned. I'm not a Ham nerd at all, just took the test so I would have club communication on trail rides. Outside of that, never used it before now. I just have an inexpensive chop suey model in my console.

Default I'll have mine on.

I listen to the same repeaters...CRA (147.225/145.145) and COconn. as well as RS-1 (146.460 simplex). I'll be driving up to the in-law's after work tonight...after 6...I only have my HT in the Subaru but can hit all the repeaters just fine.

Anyone know if the Breck through GrandJ repeaters are linked back up? I couldn't hit any CConn. repeaters outside of Denver two weeks ago. (that's no Breck, no vail, no Glenwood, no GrJunc.).

Did you come across the mention of repeaters? If they sound foreign just say so, be happy to explain them. These allow low power stations to cover a MUCH wider area than they could ever hope to simplex.


The APRS part is a fairly advanced concept, so I don't want to confuse the issue. Suffice to say it means automatic packet reporting system. It's a way to use the RF spectrum to fire packets of information around. It can be used to send text messages, weather data and position reports to other hams. When you're driving around you can see other stations' periodic beacons, which most of the time contains GPS data that your station can decode into relative locations from you. Along with the GPS data I inject a reading of what I'm doing on the voice radio, which might be simplex or a repeater. If it's on a repeater it includes the necessary information to work the repeater.

I have not heard if the system is relinked. They were looking to link them over IRLP last I heard. The Front Range machines are still linked (Springs to Denver) and the western slope repeaters are still linked to each other (Eagle, Leadville, Vail, Glenwood, GJ).

I know what a repeater is, though I have never used one. It was the APRS part that I was unfamiliar with. I'm not sure if my radio has that capability, but Nakman would probably know. He was fiddling with mine on the maze run and showed me all kinds of stuff I didn't know. Dang....starting to feel old that I have electronics I barely know how to work. Sad.
