Default Solar installer?

Can anyone recommend a residential solar installer?

My co-worker's son does roofs and supposedly solar but I don't anything about his experience in the solar field...

I know I hear at least one company advertising all the time on the radio...Solar City I think? Sounds intriguing in that they install the equipment for free and your "payment" is supposedly less than what you pay for electricity...

I remember solar was big here back in the 80s and then died out...Not sure what the ROI is today...

I review and issue permits for solar systems. Solar City and Namaste are pretty busy at it these days. Not that I just suggest turning to the "big names", but with solar, the industry is changing and complicated. I have seen a couple installs go very bad due to lack of experience. I can also speak well of the folks in those companies that I have worked with...seem pretty professional. Well prepared plans, passing inspections, playing nice and following the rules.

Solar is becoming pretty popular...issuing lots of permits for them these days.

Solar City is a great business plan.... for Solar City. For you... not so much. Not horrible... but you don't own the equipment and you lease it. Most of the time, in the near term at least, the cash flow is net zero. Down the road if rates increase you might save a bit.

CCS Solar is experienced and I know their electrician is top rate (they replaced a service for me). Good guys, and you get the benefit rather than the installing company.

With Xcel dropping the rebate amount significantly, you have to crunch the numbers harder to see if it makes sense. Kinda ticks me off. If we had solar on most rooftops, we could drill and mine a LOT LESS even with increased population. Seems shortsighted for everyone but Xcel.

yea, i noticed the rebate drop with the little research i've been doing. here's the current rebates..

1 $1.75 4¢ 4 4.000 0
2 $1.00 9¢ 5 1.586 3.414
3 50¢ 11¢ 5 5
4 0¢ 14¢ 6 6

step 1 is already sold out. step 2 has a rebate of $1/watt and has 3.4 MW left in it. comes out to about 30% of the cost of the system. plus you get a 30% federal rebate. still a pretty good deal right now. step 3, not so much.

we just bought a place and this is something i've been wanting to do for a long time. besides, the software i write is all based around energy management. i should be eating my own dog food.

saw someone else with the lease program. didn't look so hot.

what about adobe solar?

I just got a solar system installed and used Independent Power Systems. I did a bunch of research and their lease options and the panels they used were the best (IMO).

Put in a rebate application ASAP if you want to make the cut. I just missed tier 1 late last year.

I know you do your research well and you know your stuff so it is easy to trust your opinion. What I want to know is, did you purchase or lease? Also what was your out of pocket cost?

We need to do something soon here, adding two big freezers to the house and possibly an electric heated floor in the master bath. I am on their website now and plan on calling them, do you get a referral fee? If so I will be sure to mention your name.
