To clarify: I've done this on a 1990 Suzuki Sidekick/Geo Tracker... EFI, but perhaps not as "modern" as an 80. The Geo was dead, so I loaned it a Sidekick's battery to start, then swapped back in the dead one while it was idling. After an hour of driving, that truck was good to go for another 2 years as long as you drove it at least once a week.

I actually carry some 4ga cables in the truck, in addition to jumpers. Use would be the potential fusible link replacement, or a more permanent remote dual battery install, or just a more stable jumper cable or welding setup.

I tried disconnecting the battery on my '91 Toyota pickup 22RE while the engine was running and the engine died immediately. YMMV
