Default Red verses green coolant

Hello friends,

I am replacing the coolant on my 1995 Corolla tomorrow and I'm wondering if I need to use the red coolant?

I have flushed the system completely and I'm ready to fill it up tomorrow. I'd prefer green based on availability, but if I need red, I will use it. Couldn't find a specified coolant in my Hanes manual.

I think you can have issues when you mix them right?

Thoughts? Opinions? Thank you.

yes and no on having issues when mixing them..the old style green when mixed with red would gel. a lot of the newer greens on the market now supposedly won't, but that doesn't mean all the different brand greens won't.

is your block all aluminum? if so, i'd stay with the red as it's made for them. if it's a mixed block (part alum/part cast) then go green.

I'm I hurting the engine with green? The PO of my corolla definitely had a gelling coagulating thing going on... I'd like to not repeat it.

And I know that Toyota red is expensive

Not sure when Toyota red started, but I know it goes at least as far back as 1997.

When did you get a Corolla? Going the pea shooter commuter route like me eh?

Can't remember why but all my research, last year, caused me to switch to the red. It is expensive but I rarely follow recommended maintenance. With that being said, It maybe 10 years before I get around to changing it again. On that note, it's not too expensive!!!

If the owners manual spec for the coolant just says 'ethylene glycol' - then I believe it's ok to use green, which I have done on numerous Toyotas of that era. Be sure to flush the block and radiator with distilled water first to completely remove the old coolant mixture.

If you purchase Toyota coolant, be sure it's the older 'Toyota red' and not the newer premixed 'Toyota pink'. Not all parts departments are paying attention to this. The pink is more expensive, and a different formulation.

FWIW, for my rebuild (1994 1FZFE) with all new hoses and new OEM radiator, had me put in green. no particular brand either.
