My 78 had a large headphone jack there that was conected to the 8-track player.

That hole was used for the 'Fan Rear' switch only seen on earlier models- mid '74 or something like that. The 'Fan Rear' switch was used in that spot, and the 'Fan Front' switch went where the usual 'Fan' switch goes now.

My '78 had a plug in that hole.

Correct. That's for the dome light switch. My kids call it for the "dope scope" :-)
