So, I think I found the coolant leak, the hoses on the oil cooler are old and they appear wet. I've got a whole new set from Toyota, so those will be replaced. I have a small drip on the radiator plug so I'm wrapping that in teflon and going to reinstall. I also ordered a new Valve cover gasket, side cover gasket, new oil pan and gasket. So, I will see if all of that fixes the problem. I'm going to check out the rear main while I'm down there, if it' still leaking I'll drop the tranny and check the cam plug.

Ricarado you the man! If all the new hoses/gaskets this weekend doesn't fix it, I will be making a visit to you.

Man, I thought 40's were supposed to leak like that. I stopped changing fluid years ago... I just top them off every so often

So, did some work Sat and Sunday. I rigged up a lift to hold the top in the garage, which worked out great. On the 40 I replaced the crush washer on the rear diff, drained and filled it. Hopefully that will take care of that leak. I was trying to replace the side cover gasket today, but once all the bolts were out I couldn't get the cover off! I didn't want to risk bending it by prying on it. I soaked it with kroil but that thing seems to be permanently welded to the block. Any tips??

I think there is a cork gasket, you might have to slice through it in several places to persuade it to give up

I'm worried about bending the side cover and not being able to get a good seal when I re-apply.

You are correct and that is a good idea.

Finally got the side cover off! It is pretty rusty and I'm concerned about this bulge around the PCV elbow. I don't think it leaks. Just for insurance I threw some JB weld on there. I'm going to sand it down and paint the whole thing. Thoughts?

it dosen't look too rusty to me....

Hit it with a wire wheel, sand it and paint it. Also get a small hammer and make sure the spots where the bolts come through it are flat again. It'll be good to go.

Make sure the surfaces on the block are clean too.

As far as replacing it goes, I have had good luck using weather strip adhesive to glue the cork gasket to the cover before setting it back in place.

I can't remember how the PVC elbow went on (welded?), but JB weld will probably work.
