It is a great place to take a day trip. You can be there from Denver in under 2 hours. The bison are just north of Carr CO.
We spent the day in the western portion of the grasslands. (They are still native short grass prairie). For those going to see the buttes they are in the eastern portion of the grasslands.
As with any wheeling trip be prepared for adverse weather.
We have seen temps well above 100 and well below freezing out there.
Also the road on the western portion can turn into the slickest gumbo mud I have seen anywhere after a strong rain.
