Default diesel timing

I need to check/set the timing on my injection pump. According to the manual, I need to have an injection pipe about 50mm long that screws onto the top of the pump on output #1, but that doesn't have a "end" on the other side. Supposedly, you rock the crank back and forth until fuel comes up, then you check the crank position when it spills.

First off, anybody ever done this?
Second, any idea of a shop that might have a short piece of injection pipe as scrap that I can make this tool out of?

Thanks!

I've removed and reinstalled the pump a few times on the 3B, with uses the same SST (short piece of injection pipe) as the 13BT.

In the end, I decided that it was just much easier to reinstall the IP to the timing mark.

It's a calibrated length of pipe that you're looking for, and I don't know precisely how long it should be. Otherwise, I'd imagine Central Motive Power would be able to make you that section of pipe.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

It's 50mm long, from nut to cut end of the pipe. There's a pic of it in the service manual, and it's not an SST, it just says make one about that long. That's not the precise part of setting the timing according to the manual, it's the point of spill.

I would normally agree with you on the timing mark. However, I'm trying to rule everything out, and I have never checked it. In the manual, they don't say to look at the mark, but to test it right after adjusting the valves. As such, I think the timing mark is just a base of reference, but as the engine wears, it needs to be adjusted. A few degrees of timing is only about a 1/16" misalignment of those marks.
True, they probably have a piece like that. I'll check in next week when I drive by again. Thx!

Interesting!

I've never looked at that part of the manual all that closely, so I figured it was an SST, and really precise.

Do the 13BT and the 3B use common injector lines? If so, I may have an old damaged 3B line that I could cut. Maybe. I need to inspect the seat to see if the line is what was unsalvageable, or if it was the seat on the IP instead. It's been so long that I don't remember exactly what the problem was now--but it was one or the other.

But if Central Motive can whip one up, I'd do that in a heartbeat.

Off the injection pump, they are same, it's just the bend path near the injector that's different. If you have a damaged one, go for it. I'll only need it once, and then you have the tool for you! It's probably something you should really check anyway.

CMP gave me an injection line yesterday that should work. I need to fit it this weekend, mod it, and give it a try. I'll post up how it goes...

It was interesting Wes. I tested the timing Saturday and it was indeed retarded by about 6d. It's really surprising to see just how little movement on the pump changes that too. Something around 3/32" actually is enough alignment change to make a difference. I've yet to run it, so no idea if that was contributing to my altitude smoking, but I suspect it was.
