lazy...

It appears the authorities were premature in dating various Land Rovers and had worked on information based on the last six digits of the VIN, which identify the chassis. However, it’s common practice among all vehicle manufacturers to recycle the same vehicle identifier numbers, the differences being in the prefix alphanumeric code.

Unbelievable! I wonder if any of them will sue (though it sounds like their legal representation was free). Good for them but just utterly disappointing and embarrasing for the feds!

That's some great news. The old 110 Defenders are pretty cool.

One of the first owners to have a visit from DHS back in July was Danny Harrington from upstate New York. Ten DHS officers arrived early one July morning demanding the seizure of his 1983 One Ten. The officers claimed the vehicle was 2000 model-year vintage and towed it away. Just a few weeks earlier Danny had replaced the clutch himself in a 10-hour marathon. As a friend of Dannys said: All the dude ever wanted was his hunk of junk truck back!
I think anyone can understand that.

Why Are The Feds Obsessed With Seizing These People's Old Trucks?

More ongoing news, like Wes mentioned. The importer, Aaron Richardetard, has yet to be charged with a crime and a few of the Rovers have been returned to the owners. It's not clear that these batch of truck have been VIN swapped like Jag/Rover and the government thought.

If anything there's a gray area that they may be a few months difference in the model year vs. manufactured date. It's possible that a 25 year old car actually be 24 model years old. IOW, in October of 1990 Imelda will be 25 years old but she's a 1991 so 2016 would be the 25 model years old. There's a chance that some of them might have only been 24 model years old when they came in.

There is a slight error in the article about crash testing. Not all cars have to be crash tested. For example Ferrari, Aston Martin and Maserati can file to not give up what would amount to a fairly large number of the production run to destroy. Particularly since they'd have to run more than one to accomplish all the front, rear and side impact tests it's possible that they'd make them crash 3 or 4 cars. But since they only sell maybe in the hundreds in a model year they can get such an exemption. It's viewed as a loophole that is probably going to be closed, though.

Gee - reminds me of firearm dealers run out of biz. by the Feds for questionable reasons. I don't think embarrassment is a big motivator.

Our government has far larger issues to be embarrassed over than this.
