I can see Kipper in 16 years. His child comes home and says they had to get a ride and left the car because they lost their keys.

" what do you mean you lost your keys. What kind of an idiot loses his keys!"

j/k - good luck Kipper

First you will sit there and can't wait till they can talk to you.

A few years go by and they look up at you with awe in their eyes on how you can be so smart and still their Dad.

A few more years go by and you begin to wish they wouldn't talk to you (They get annoying you see)

Next, they are amazed at how stupid and out of touch you are.

Then they are out on their own and you can't wait for them to call and talk to you

Next they are amazed at how you survived as a parent and really look up to you . . . . . then ask for money to help with the rent/car/etc.

LOL! I've been at that stage for a few years now, with both kids!

Funny; my daughter has been wanting me to help her put in a new power steering pump for the last couple weekends. Last Saturday she came over with the new pump.

I check the manual and the first thing it says is to suck as much fluid out of the reservoir as you can to minimize spillage when you take it out. Makes sense. I get out my vacuum doohicky to suck the fluid out, open the cap, look inside and...there's no fluid.

She says "My friend Justin from work was putting the fluid in there" as she points to the brake fluid reservoir. I explained that the brake fluid goes in there, and the ATF goes in here. She said "yeah I told him I didn't think that was right, the cap didn't have a dipstick in it". So after a couple of flushes and fills in her power steering, and a complete bleed of her brake system, she's good to go without needing a new power steering pump. We also replaced her serpentine belts (93 Sebering, she misses her 4runner), she was smart enough to know that since we needed to take them off anyway go ahead and put new ones on. <sigh>

At least this time she didn't ask me to buy the parts.

Guess the point is, like Ken wrote, it's a process, and it never really ends. The nice thing is when they get past a certain age they start respecting you again. I don't know that they ever really stop respecting you, but there is a certain age range where it seems like they don't. Get past that part and it gets better.

Now she's interested in buying my 71 40 off me whenever I finish restoring the 76. She even offered to help to move it along. I told her I'd give it to her if she helped with the resto. Cool. righton. Parenting is the most rewarding, frustrating, wonderful, difficult job anyone could ever have. Kipper, look forward to it!
