Whisky Tango .......????????

Let's see... going from a -20db gain (that's Negative 20) to a ~3db gain is a Decrease?????? Oh, and the insertion loss from the adapters is, at worse case, 0.1db i.e. no big deal.

Yea, Dave is right, run a strap form the tire rack to the bumper or the body and you're golden. I missed that.

If you have some time and want to have fun, grab a and do a search for "Zepp antenna", "Zeppelin antenna" or "End Fed Zepp" the original NO ground plane 1/2 wave antenna.

So, I did some math with my calipers a few times today and figured if I left the lower washer off on the PL mount I would have enough contact with the center conductor on the antenna as well as have enough structural integrity with an appropriately drilled hole through the 1/4" plate to keep things together. I also realized that I wanted to install the antenna now, if mechanically feasible, as opposed to waiting until I can get my preferred mount got fab'd. Pics are below. I included one of the HT in its "mobile" mount.

BTW- I barely had enough cable from the PL mount to the PL-259 to get the job done. If I would not have had the 12" adapter cable for the PL-259 to SMA it would not have made it. When I was at HRO I insisted on the longer cable. The guy there thought I was crazy and said: "most vehicles are not 3.5 meters long." I pointed out that I actually had to route the cable and he still grumbled! From now on I will seek trusted advice and order online unless I need to put my hands on something.

Looks good to me

And I agree on the above...I've been to HRO once and they tried to talk me out of what I wanted except one item. I based my buying on the advice found here and after reading your thoughts I'm glad I did. I figured it out and with the cost of gas today it probably cost me more to drive to HRO (gas $$), pay sales tax, and get less than stellar service than it would have cost to just buy online (I've had excellent service from Hamcity) and pay shipping. Call ahead as well to make sure they have what you want. The guys seemed friendly enough but like you when I asked a question I got different answers from each of the guys there...and there were 3 guys working the day I went
