Default New Gas Mileage Record!

Here's the background: 1989 FJ62, 234k on the clock. Riding on BFG A/T's, 32X11.50 - everything else stock, and probably original.

Filled up in Steamboat Springs on Monday, drove back down to the front range. Then drove back and forth to work all week, until I filled up last night.

264.3 miles on the odometer. Add 13% for the bigger tires for an actual distance traveled of 298.659.

Total gas used: 19.122 gallon

15.618 mpg!!

I'm not saying it was a fast trip, plenty of time to enjoy the scenery when you're approaching the tunnel in an aging 3FE, but that's the best mileage I've ever had in this truck by a long length. I wasn't exactly letting it loaf either, I was solidly over 3000-3500rpm all the way up to the tunnel, maintaining 35mph at 10,000+ feet doesn't come easy!

Doesn't exactly put me in the environmentalist hall of fame, but relatively speaking that's a pretty good tank. Helps when you start up high and drive down hill.

Plus, the seat-of-my-pants-ometer says it's running much better now. Those short back and forth to work trips really wear it down, I'm sure I cleaned out tons of crap by keeping it at operating speeds for three consecutive hours.

That is all, just wanted to share.

Nice! On the way back from Utah we were in a '97 Suburban 1500 (350) and got passed (we were going about 80) by a 62 on I-70 EB between Glenwood and Vail. Toyota did something right with the 3FE it seems...

Must have been Kipper in his V862 to be moving that fast. I've learned to love this engine, even though its slow. It feels and sounds just right, and just keeps running.

I actually got over 20 MPG in my 71 FJ40 going to Moab one year, and that was even into a headwind. I normally get more like 16 in that rig. My 78 FJ45 only gets about 14, it hasn't been jetted for our altitude like the 40 has.

I once got 203.5 mpg on a trip to Peru and back. The Secret Service seized my carburetor and interrogated me for 36 hours straight, then operated on me and removed a small chunk of my brain so I couldn't remember how to reinvent it. They told me I was a threat to the health of America's oil companies. Then Dick Cheney came in the room and kicked me in the nuts.

Now I just pay my $2.50 at the pump while singing "God Bless America" and thank our petroleum overlords for allowing me to live.
