Default Serious engine problems...

The latest on my 1972 FJ40 with F engine:
Compression on #2 cylinder is close to zero. The exhaust valve
is not seating. Valve adjustment didn't help. Sigh. And I don't have the time or skills to pull the head myself.

So here are the options I've thought of so far:
1. Ignore it. Live with a lumpy idle and overall poor running.
2. Have local shop do a valve job. Quoted at $1700. Ouch.
3. Get more valve job quotes.
4. Look for a good used F engine.
5. Other???

And advice/opinions appreciated. Thanks.

Pull the head take it to a machine shop and slap it back on. Pulling the head and putting it back on is probably easier than working on drum brakes on a '72

x2. Probably cost about $500 in parts and labor if you pull it yourself, have a machine shop do the valves and drop it back in yourself. You probably have a burnt valve which is why you have 0 compression.

I'll jump on the do the head yourself thing. hand tools, a breaker bar and a strong back are all you need. oh, and a box, numbered to match the pushrods cause you don't want to mix those up.

You can have the head off in about an hour or two. Take it down to the shop, it'll take a couple days to get cleaned, which will give you time to clean up all the parts before you reassemble. Then once you get it back you can have everything back together in a couple more hours, adjust the valves, drive, adjust the valves a little later, and keep on going!

But if a valve adjustment didn't help, maybe it's rings or something?

If you have more money than time, Joe C. at CTS in Conifer can probably have that knocked out in a few days for you and I'm sure it would be less than 17 bills.

Phil Simmons and I replaced the head gasket on his 72 FJ40 in one evening - it's really easy. If you want to do the valve yourself, I have the special valve spring compressor and lapping compound to match the valve to the seat.

thanks all for the advice/suggestions. It's going to have to sit for
a bit, until work calms down, and then I'll figure out what to do.
In the meantime, I'll drive the FJ62. No great hardship.
