Unhappy OEM minitruck radio - not working

So I turned my radio off about five years ago when my speakers died (nothing special, just OEM speakers and deck). They got blown out, probably because of age and always being turned all the way up (driving around with windows down on highway listening to music).

So last night I FINALLY got around to buying new speakers and installing them. I go to turn the radio on and - nothing.
.
.
The radio doesn't turn on. I checked and replaced the fuse (it wasn't bad but I replaced it for good measure). Still nothing. Now I'm

Besides the fuse I don't know what else to check. It's just had to sit there for the last few years, I haven't messed with it at all. I haven't tried the tape deck, but I'm assuming it isn't working either.

I'm not the kind of person to go messing with electrical stuff if I don't have to, and I don't need a huge bumpin' sound system, but I would like for this to work. So where can I start looking, or what basic tests can I run, to see why my radio isn't working? I suppose I'm going to have to tear apart the dash to get to everything...

you know, you try to fix stuff and make it nice, and then...

I put an OEM Toyota radio in my 40, I think it came from a 98 Taco. But it was like $20 on ebay.. played tapes, also had an auxillary input in the back. Only point being, I wouldn't even try to fix it, I'd just get another one... you'll spend another 4 hours messing with it, and maybe not even fix it, and you're worth more than $5/hr.

Default I agree

yup - I'm with Nakman on this one...but other things to check would be the basic power and ground connection. Also double check there are no frayed wires shorting out at the speakers (I had a radio that would turn itself off when the speaker wire would ground out).

then again, it could just be dead.

I have the radio that came out of my truck, a generic AM/FM (not even a tape or 8-track!). You can have it if you want it. Probably would plug right into your harness.

What can go bad? I dunno, a lot or could be something simple. If you want to open it up and root all around in there, we could. Without schematics it would somewhat stabbing in the dark.

Personally, I went down to Car Toys and got the nicest Alpine the budget allowed. Been solid for 10 years now, although the buttons are now just lighted blobs, the screen printing long ago rubbed off.
