Default Winch accessories

I'm in the market for some accessories and need some feedback.

Is a wireless winch control worth the effort, or a waste of money? The premium one is about 130$ and the cheap ones are $40ish. The wired version seems pretty reliable though not needing a battery.

What about hooks? I've seem some cool hooks that have the safety latch integrated into the forging, (70-90$). Most hooks have no retainer latch at all. Why not just use a 3/4" shackle on the cable eye and forget the hook altogether?

I never saw the ROI on this one.. If you run the cable under the wiper, then the hand controller in through the open window, you've got in cab controls.. plus little fingers wouldn't be able to push it.

I agree on the hooks, you can shackle just about anything. Do you have a snatch block? tree saver? Those would be first if not, IMO.

Ditto on the Snatch block and tree saver. I got mine from Slee. Don't forget leather gloves and a bag to keep everything together. I've seen enough people have trouble with the regular wired control. I think wireless control is just not necessary. In-cab is cool but I too have small people that like to pretend to drive when I'm not paying attention. Also I like to run the controls from outside the rig in some situations.

I use the 3/4" clevis through the eye for the end of the winch line and like it. Simple, and it stays hooked up. Also don't have to worry as much about how stuff pulls on the clevis. The hooks are faster, and I liked it because of that, but I love the security of the clevis.

i just looked this up for the picture, but here's a nice example:

A few months ago, Charlie (5) pulled the wired contoller out of the door pocket in my 80, correctly oriented the plug on the control box and plugged in the cable, and proceeded to demonstrate to his friend how a winch works.

Moral of the story: I'm sure in-cab controls are even more tempting, but sticking with the old wired controller won't necessarily prevent your kids from messing with the winch.

I agree with Tim

You have to get out of the truck to use the winch. Sometimes you may want to be oput of the truck while your controlling to get a better view of whats going on or have someone out of the truck control it

But I know its cool to add switches.

The other stuff Tim mentioned are the ones I would get.

FWIW, this guy was pretty cool, he had nice straps and stuff. It was a nice drive up there, but his prices were good and all of his straps were made by a rigging company in denver and rated.

He even had a nice little bag and gloves that came with a kit he offered.

I've been using his straps for a year and a half now and am pleased.
