Default FJ40 Back on the road again after almost 30 years

This has to be the longest FJ40 project in history 8-)

Of course most of that time it sat in the garage for years at a time with no progress because I was too busy otherwise or not in the mood to work on it - but there are also a few minor mods that took time to work out.

Today was finally the day to take it out on the road and get a highway tune done (The 2F engine is now running a Megasquirt ECU with a custom MPFI setup so tuning is done with a laptop).

The good news it starts and runs like a 2017 engine instead of the original 1972 carb setup. The engine was balanced to 1 gram, so it's smooth as you'd imagine and starts in a flash. I can't really get into it yet to see how the turbo boost feels because the fabricated FJ62 steering needs its initial alignment, that trip to the alignment shop will be next.

So it looks like I won't have to struggle through the upcoming CO winter in my Miata. Hopefully it will all shake out well enough to make it to Moab 2018.

That looks fun! I'm confused by your exhaust to the turbo. Custom manifolds?

What intercooler is that? I used a Volvo 240 in mine and was nearly a perfect fit. Yours is spot on though.

It was aftermarket, no-name but a perfect fit. If it was 1/8" wider, wouldn't have cleared the headlight connectors. Just perfect.

Do you have a link to your build?

Having consulted with Steve about this truck for the last year or so, he has overcome issues that would have killed off many of the lesser of us. A hearty congrats to him is most appropriate.

Thank you much. I would say the fuel injection side of this project was an excellent learning experience. I've worked on MPFI cars before, but nothing beats rolling your own from scratch. There are definitely some subtle integration issues you pick up from trail and error.

Doing a turbo is kinda like installing a garbage disposal, if you can get the pipes to line up you're pretty much done. The only issue I ran into was oil drainage, if you don't get that right you get all kinds of blow-by. Lesson learned there is the oil drain tube cannot be too big, or too straight.
