Default Recent work

Over the last year, I've been migrating away from families and weddings and heading more towards commercial work and high end portraits. Little bit of a learning curve and a whole lot of fun for me. Hoping to expand this work.

Partially because of middle daughter's dance career, I've been pulled into working with dancers and dance companies. Great people to work with and they're always up for something creative.

Some of it is indoors...

But I prefer being outside...

Planning some stuff down at Great Sand Dunes and a few other spots. Nice to have a truck again so I can get to where I want to take people.

Day job tends to put me in interesting places and I always carry a camera. Back in June I was in Memphis and just happened to wander into Bike Night. That was wild. Some pretty impressive machines and the south is, well, it's the south.

One of the things I do for a creative recharge, or just to see things differently, is to street shoot. Sometimes I'll take the big Canon but most times I do this with film. Either an old Canon F1 or my favorite camera of all time, the Hasselblad 500cm. When I'm street shooting, I find the Hassy to be a conversation starter and not off putting. Most people have no idea what it is.

A couple of weeks ago, I was at the zoo with my wife and youngest daughter. Our older two have been gone all summer and we were looking for something to do. I grabbed the Hassy and two rolls of HP5. Piper wanted to shoot too so she got the F1 and a random roll of 35mm that I grabbed out of the fridge.

The Hassy is a camera that knows no age. The pictures that come out of it now are just as sharp as they were 40 years ago and as they will be 40 years from now. I need to use it more often.

Thought I'd share a few images.

Nice photos, Sean. I dig the Hasselblad shots. I just looked on eBay at this camera. Looks like you can get a nice setup for under $1k. Does it take 120 roll film?

Thanks. It's a Hassy 501 CM and I have 65, 80 and 150 lenses. The 80 is definitely my favorite. I've only shot the 65 a few times but the wide angle in square format is weird to me. Not used to it. The 150 is solid too. Been using it with studio setups. That was a learning curve.

I've got a couple of 120 backs, a couple of 220s and a polaroid. I don't shoot much 220 though. My 645 setup uses the same back for 120 and 220. The backing plate inside rotates which is super handy.

eBay has some good deals but most of the used stuff I pick up comes from KEH. They have great deals on old film gear.

The past couple of weeks has seen me in...
- Battle Creek, MI
- Charlotte, NC
- Greenville, SC
- Marshfield, WI
- Kohler, WI
- Milwaukee, WI

As always, a camera came with and if I had time, I wandered.

Battle Creek, which is home to the company that gave birth to Tony the Tiger. He was plastered everywhere in their offices and after the 5th time of seeing a giant wall mural of him saying "You're GRRRRREEEEEAAAAAAATTTTT!", I wanted to punch him.

These guys were covering all the bases...

Next was Charlotte. I hadn't ever been here and it is quite the city. Tons of contrasts and for whatever reason, an equal amount of physically beautiful people. I wasn't prepared for either. Wish I'd had more time to explore.

I so wish this had been open.

Marshfield and Kohler were quick visits in traveling salesman mode. Upper WI is gorgeous though and I wouldn't mind spending some more time exploring there.

Milwaukee is not one of my favorite cities. I've spent a lot of time there, know my way around pretty well and have found some great restaurants and neighborhoods but it feels as though the life has drained. The School of Engineering is there and my corporate HQ but not much else. Oh, and Harley Davidson.

Hoping to stay home for a little while now. Right now, it looks like I might be home the entire month, which would be crazy, but I'm sure that will change.

Great pics, thanks for sharing. I need to take my new setup to California next week and spend some time shooting after work.
