Default Need a Part Brought to Slickrock

Post mortem: Turns out my issue was a sheared crank pulley key and subsequent wallered out crank pulley. Engine ran but belts not turning, thus no water pump or alternator. Made it in to camp and made subsequent diagnosis.

Root cause failure analysis. When Hugh Phillips' tech Keith assembled this motor in 2012, he did not use locktight on the big ol' nut on the end of the crank pulley. Two years ago, at Cruise Moab 2015, I got in to camp and observed a funny sound from the engine. Visual observation revealed the crank pulley was wobbly. Shut motor down and checked, the big ol' nut was missing, and the only thing making things turn was the key and the only thing keeping the pulley on the end of the crank was the belts. Grateful Abe brought me a new big ol' nut and socket and adapter and with some locktight, a camp fix was made and I didn't think much more of it. I used the parking brake and 5th gear to honk it down.

As we were observing the engine running and belts not turning Tuesday evening he said that there is basically no way to get the ~300ft-lbs required on that nut using the high gear/parking brake method, and the only way is to lock the flywheel with a pry bar or equivalent, and that may have contributed to the issue I had this year. My personal opinion is that 2 years ago the key was stressed and maybe worn and that started the cascading failure.

I was able to get my hands on a used FJ40 2 row pulley and a good key in camp, made the repair yesterday and was able to get home under my own power with no issues. But I still have a 2 row pulley so no A/C, and the seal is thrashed, so I need a good used FJ60 crank pulley and of course change the seal when I pull the 2 row and install the 3 row.

Anybody have one laying around?

I am more screwed than I thought, BVB and I determined that the issue is my crank pulley isn't turning, key is sheared. He suggests pulling the big old nut and putting a washer under it to get it tighter onto the press fit. So I need the big socket and 3/4 to 1/2 adapter that is in my rollaway at home, or is someone has that they can bring. The socket is either 46mm or 1-13/16.

Then I need to find a flat washer big enough to get under there.

Thanks Matt, it looks like Jim Sanville will bring the socket and adapter, and I just need to find a shop in Moab that will fab me up a washer.

They are over at Jeff's campsite now wrenching on his truck. I think he got what he needed, but he will post up when he gets a minute if not.
