Default Going Down Under?

Finishing up my assignment in Norway and coming home this Friday. Now there seems to be discussion about moving us to Adelaide, Australia for 2 years for a big Homeland Security type communications system covering most of south Australia. Very interesting.

So, I had to go on-line and checkout what type of rigs you can buy down there. The 70 series Landcruiser GXL wagon looks like a dream come true. 4 door SUV comes std with a 4.5L v8 inter-cooled turbo diesel, manual trans, disc brakes, 16" alloy wheels, part-time 4x4 with locking hubs, solid axles front & rear with locking diffs front & rear standard. All of the usual other stuff like AC, power steering, air bags, etc. Really makes you wonder why they don't offer this in the US. I have to think they would sell a bazillion of them. Only problem is the steering wheel is on the wrong side for the US and its probably impossible to bring one of these back to the US when the time comes. Looks like it would be great to have while there. Fuel consumption is shown as 11.9L/100KM combined city/hwy. If I did the math correctly, I think that works out to about 21 - 22 MPG. Not that great but not bad for a rig that probably has very good performance with the diesel. Bet theres a lot of other old 40's and such running around down there too.

The drive away price is 67,500 Australian dollars which at the current conversion rate is about $48,500 US dollars. Not that bad for a nicely equipped rig that is built the way it is. They would take a huge chunk out of the Rubicon market if they brought them to the US.

Looks like there is also a Landcruiser club in Adelaide, Toyota Land Cruiser Club of South Australia

my brother is moving to Australia as well. I'm starting saving my pennies to bring back a troopy. I hope to visit him in a year or so and bring back a sweet landcruiser!

I think you should get some really big suitcases and bring home a few of those.

That is the rig you want Randy, or the 4door ute (pick up) version for sure.

Why we don't get it: emissions and safety.

Bring it back in pieces and register it as a home build, but you'll probably have to leave the engine behind.

Fixed it for you Corbet. The reason the 70 is not sold here is simply that Toyota doesn't want to. How else do you explain the G wagon sporting an 80's design currently being sold in the USA? Mercedes figured it out. Are you saying Toyota can't? If they wanted to, the 70 could easily meet crash and emissions. They have plenty of "approved" power trains they could drop in there.
http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/vehicles/class/class-G Boxy, three diff locks, solid axles. Think of it as a Rubicon with slightly better build quality. ahahaha

Maybe. We need to find out for sure if were going first, then find out if the company will compensate me for selling almost new vehicles. If not, it wont hurt it to sit inside the garage. We'll be coming back on home leave twice a year so it will still get driven a little. If I do need to sell it, I will let you know first.

Well, I hope you stay around here, but if you move, and don't want to keep it, let me know. Of course, if you decide to keep it and just need it driven a bit, I can help with that. :-)

Well, Dee and I leave this coming Monday the 22nd for Australia. We should be back at the end of 2017.

I just ordered the company vehicle. It will be a Land Cruiser Prado with the 2.8l turbo diesel, automatic and towing package. We may rent one of those aussie pop up camp trailers when we go exploring. It will be Wildfire red with ivory interior. Now if we can just figure out a way to bring it home someday...

We did decide to keep the Rubicon and just keep it in storage here while were gone. We will be coming back on home leave in Oct 16 and June 17 so we will have something to drive then.

I sure wish we could have made it to Cruise Moab before we left, but we'll just have to settle for the Bronco's winning the Super Bowl instead. If we doing anything fun while were down under I will post up some pictures.

Good luck Randy. I love Australia and have been tempted to move there myself. Been there twice and can't wait to go back
