Default Sangre De Cristo – Sand Dunes Overnight Independence Day Run

Name: 20170218_064617A.jpg
Views: 192
Size: 80.1 KBThe full loop is just around 100 miles. Best to top off your tank in Canon City or Salida depending on your route. There’s also fuel in Cotopaxi, Westcliffe and near the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Stock 4 wheel-drive is sufficient for these trails.

Meet at the Kaiser Southern Compound Saturday, July 1. Located approximately 20 miles North of Westcliffe, CO near Cotopaxi, CO. It's about a 2 3/4-3 hr drive from Denver. Primitive camping with water available onsite. Will PM directions to participants attending the run.

Sunday Route: At 9 AM, we’ll head South on Hwy 69 through the Wet Valley, Westcliff and on to the Medano Pass entrance. Wolf Springs Ranch is right near the exit for Medano Pass. (You might spot some buffalo here.) Medano climbs up and its one of the few passes that are treed to the top. The road passes through some sections of forest that were burned in a 6,249 acre wildfire in 2010. Dropping down the other side there are quite a few water crossings. The sand dunes are located at the bottom of the West side of the pass. We’ll camp Northeast of the park or an alternate spot depending on availability.

Monday Route: At 9 AM, we’ll go East of Hwy 285 at Villa Grove and ascend Hayden Pass. Gentle for the most part except right before the top of the pass. Dropping down the other side is pretty unique. We’ll pass through the 2016 Hayden Pass Burn Area. We’ll end up back on the US 50 pavement near at Coaldale. Participants can depart for home or return to Kaiser’s for camping Monday night.

Tuesday, July 4 – Optional Westcliffe Independence Day Parade begins at 10 AM. Fun small-town Independence Day Parade on Westcliffe’s Main Street.

Participants:
Dave & Idelle
Rachel May
Zach & Alex
Romer (2)

Yes, for trailers designed for off-road use.
