Default Governor Basin Information (Ouray area):

Hello Risng Sun members. I figured you-all would be the best group for me to ask of this question.

4 AZ families are hitting Ouray in about 2-weeks in our three 80's and my 100. None have ever done Governor Basin by Yankee Boy Basin. I'm intrigued because everyone says it's gorgeous and difficult. What' I'm confused about however is the variance in reports from sites about difficulty. Here's what I've found:

http://www.securez57.com/smallBiz/so...z9n9jigkn.html

An "easy trek" though from 1998:

http://www.4x4now.com/a4f98a.htm

2004...narrow and treacherous and not recommended:

http://www.jeffblaylock.com/window/2...rnor-basin.php

Lots of pics here...mentions of shelf roads...sure looks like we can do it.

http://mycolorado.org/images/governor_basin/index.htm

There is an optional spur loop in Governor and maybe that's where the worst stuff is. ???

So what do you all know? Too crazy and dangerous or should we plan on it?

THANKS!

For virtually anyone who has experience on a 4WD road, this road isn't anything significant. If you were referring to the Sidney Basin section I have listed on my site, it's not difficult, either; just less traveled. It's less "difficult" than the Governor route which has just but one short rocky section and a shelf section. Like any road in the San Juans, it's all about the views. You're good to go.

Awesome. That's funny that I had found your pictures earlier and you're a RS Member. We'll plan on Governor then. Always good to do something new!

Though not too active, as you can tell. I try to stay out of their hair! I saw your post via traffic to my Governor page. You'll enjoy the road, and your trip is dead-center of wildflower peak bloom.

GREAT info!!

I love the Yankee Boy Basin area and have stayed away from Governor Basin after reading that it is a dangerous/treacherous road...Sounds like those reports are just to scare people away from a beautiful area

I don't think there is anything in the San Juans that rates as "difficult", the one obstacle on Poughkeepsie Gulch being a possible exception when it is wet. There is plenty of "mistake and die" stuff, though

I'd be checking snow reports when making plans. Unless it is plowed (yes, plowed) some of the higher elevation routes may not even open this year.
